A Nostalgic Kentucky Christmas in Madisonville

The glow of lights after dark. A Christmas parade rolling down Main Street. The sound of a model train chugging along the tracks. Finding a one-of-a-kind gift from a local artist. Gathering with family for traditions that have been around for generations. If you’re looking for a Christmas that feels a little more nostalgic, make your way to Madisonville, Kentucky.

This holiday season, spend a day, a weekend or simply an afternoon making your way through some of Madisonville’s favorite Christmas traditions.

Start With the Lights at Deck the Park

November 26–January 1 |4–9 p.m. nightly
Madisonville City Park

Begin your Christmas adventure at Madisonville City Park, where Deck the Park returns November 26 and runs through January 1, 2027. The free Christmas attraction transforms Madisonville City Park into a winter wonderland of lights, rides and holiday displays. Drive through or get out and walk through the displays, available every evening from 4 to 9 p.m.

Load up the family, turn on the Christmas music and take in the lights together. It’s the kind of Christmas tradition that works for every generation, from little ones seeing the lights for the first time to grandparents making the drive with their family. Deck the Park runs throughout the holiday season, so you don’t have to squeeze it into just one night. Make it the beginning of your Christmas itinerary, or come back and enjoy it again later in the season.

Then Head Downtown for the Mistletoe Art Stroll

December 4 | 4–8 p.m.
Downtown Madisonville

Explore downtown Madisonville this Christmas with maker demonstrations, a live ice carving demonstration, unique handmade gifts, and local shopping. Grab a bite to eat, enjoy the Christmas tree lighting and community caroling, take a horse-drawn carriage ride, and let the kids enjoy free holiday activities. It’s an evening to shop, explore, and enjoy a little Christmas nostalgia.

Send a Letter to Santa at Santa’s Vintage Post Office

December 4–11 | Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m., extended hours on December 4 during the Art Stroll
Hopkins Co. Tourist & Convention Commission Visitor Center

Add a little extra Christmas magic to your visit to Madisonville with Santa’s Vintage Post Office at the Visit Madisonville Visitor Center! From December 4-11, kids can write letters to Santa for FREE, and no stamps are needed.

Even better, every child will receive a letter back from Santa! Stop by Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or visit during the Mistletoe Art Stroll on December 4. It’s a fun way for little ones to share their Christmas wishes and get a little North Pole magic in return.

Make Time for the Christmas Parade

December 5 | 5 p.m.
Downtown Madisonville

Then comes one of those Christmas traditions that never gets old: the Madisonville Noon Kiwanis Christmas Parade. Gather downtown, find a spot along the route and settle in for an evening of festive floats, lights, music and holiday cheer. Bring the kids, bring the grandparents, bundle up and make an evening of it.

Because sometimes the simplest Christmas traditions are the ones you remember most.

Step Into the Story at Return to Bethlehem

December 11–14 | Friday, 5–7 p.m. | Saturday, 5–8 p.m. | Sunday, 2–5 p.m. | Monday, 5–8 p.m.
First Baptist Church Madisonville

Round out your Christmas itinerary with Return to Bethlehem, a walk-through drama that takes you back to Bethlehem on the evening of Christ’s birth.

As you make your way through the experience, reenactors portray shopkeepers, families, soldiers, prisoners and others going about daily life in ancient Israel. Experience the sights, sounds and smells of the city as people sell their wares, tend their animals and raise their families, all while the anticipation of Christ’s birth fills the air.

Admission is free, with offerings accepted. Large groups of 15 or more are encouraged to call 270-821-3611 ahead for reservations. While you wait for your turn to make the journey, enjoy live music in the sanctuary.

It’s a meaningful way to slow down during the holiday season and remember the reason for the season.

Make Your Own Christmas Memories

Maybe that’s what we love most about Christmas traditions. They remind us of the Christmases we had growing up, while giving us the chance to create new memories with the people we love. A drive through the lights. An afternoon downtown. A parade watched from the sidewalk. An evening spent stepping into the story of Christmas.

This year, make Madisonville part of your Christmas tradition. Come for the lights. Stay for the art, the parade and the Christmas story. And somewhere along the way, make a few memories of your own.

A nostalgic Kentucky Christmas is waiting in Madisonville.
