If you’re looking for a quick weekend escape, you’re sure to discover something new in Hopkins County. There are a variety of events scheduled for this weekend, September 18-19, and you’re sure to find something everyone in your family will enjoy.
The weekend starts off on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7:30 pm with a center stage performance by the Oak Ridge Boys at the Glema Mahr Center for the Arts, 2000 College Drive. Take some time before the show to enjoy the Five Perspectives from Muhlenberg County art exhibit currently on display in the Anne P. Baker Gallery.
Enjoy plenty of barbeque, live music, arts and crafts, and more at one of several festivals being held this weekend. Visit Nebo for barbeque, arts and crafts, music, and kids’ inflatables at the Fall Festival and BBQ, Friday beginning at 6 pm and continuing Saturday at 10 am. Enjoy live music, food vendors, and community booths at SaturDAY Live in downtown Madisonville 11 am-3pm, on the corner of Main and Center streets. Get some all-you-can-eat barbeque, play games, and take a chance on the basket raffle at Christ the King Old Fashioned Barbeque Picnic on Saturday 4 pm-8pm at Christ the King Church, Highway 41 in Madisonville.
Before you get your fill of festival food, head to Dawson Springs for the Run Through the Forest 5K at Pennyrile Forest State Park on Saturday, September 19. Registration begins at 7 am, with the race starting at 8 am. Christ the King will host the 5K Porker Run with a 1-mile race and Piglet Dash in conjunction with their picnic. Registration is at 7:30 am and the race begins at 8:30 am.
If you’re looking for a sporting event with some possible spills and thrills, visit the Western Kentucky Speedway on Saturday at 7 pm for auto races. At 9 pm Daredevil “Big” Ed Beckley—a 6-ft 2-inch tall, 300-pound, 65-year-old motorcycle stuntman—will attempt a 120-ft jump during the intermission show. Big Ed has performed across the United States and has received national attention on television programming such as NBC’s Real People, Fox’s World’s Greatest Stuntman, Stunt Masters, and Stunts Gone Bad, along with several others.
Finish out your weekend with some shopping in downtown Madisonville or pick out a pumpkin and some fresh produce at one of our farmer’s markets.
