Mahr Park Celebrates 10 Years!!

Mahr Park Arboretum officially celebrates a decade of memories, growth, and community as it marks ten years since opening to the public on October 29, 2016. What began as a vision to preserve the natural beauty and legacy of Dr. Merle and Glema Mahr has grown into a treasured regional destination, welcoming residents and travelers alike to experience nature, recreation, and community in Madisonville, Kentucky.

Formerly Hidden Hills Farm, the land was gifted to the community by Dr. Merle and Glema Mahr, transforming their cherished farm into a public treasure for generations to enjoy. Its rolling hills, towering trees, and peaceful waters have become a setting straight out of a nature book, offering visitors a place to explore the outdoors, discover local history, and create lasting memories.

Over the past decade, Mahr Park has welcomed families, nature enthusiasts, outdoor adventurers, photographers, disc golfers, wedding parties, and visitors from near and far. From quiet walks along winding trails and afternoons on Lake Pee Wee to community festivals, educational programs, and celebrations with loved ones, the park has become a place where meaningful connections and special memories are made.

Today, the 270-acre Level II arboretum features winding trails, a Nature Play Area, lush gardens, native plants and natural habitats, green spaces, gathering spaces, a welcoming entrance sign, kayak access, dog parks, top-rated disc golf courses, ponds, and extensive shoreline along Lake Pee Wee. These amenities, along with year-round events and outdoor experiences, continue to draw visitors to Madisonville while providing the community with a place to gather, explore, and connect with nature. The continued growth of Mahr Park has also been made possible through the generosity of the Friends of Mahr Park, Mahr Charitable Trust, and community partners, whose support has advanced the park’s vision and expanded opportunities for visitors.

“Mahr Park is so much more than a place to visit. It is a place where memories are made, friendships grow, families gather, and our community comes together,” said Ashton Robinson, Mahr Park Superintendent. “Celebrating ten years gives us an opportunity to reflect on how far we have come, recognize everyone who has played a part in our story, and look forward to the memories still waiting to be made. We are incredibly thankful for our community, visitors, partners, staff, city team, the Mahr Charitable Trust, and, above all, Dr. Merle and Glema Mahr, whose generosity made it all possible.”

As Mahr Park celebrates this milestone, the community is invited to reflect on its favorite memories and share the moments that have made the arboretum special with others. Each visit, staff and volunteer effort, and new discovery has helped shape the story of Mahr Park’s first decade. “Mahr Park is a true treasure for Madisonville, bringing our community together while creating lasting memories for residents and visitors. We are grateful for the generosity of Dr. Merle and Glema Mahr and look forward to seeing the park continue to thrive for generations to come.” — Mayor Cotton

As the park looks toward the future, its commitment remains rooted in honoring the legacy of Dr. Merle and Glema Mahr, preserving the land’s natural beauty, and providing opportunities for recreation, education, stewardship, and connection for generations to come. The story of Mahr Park Arboretum is only beginning.
