Mahr Park Arboretum is excited to announce it has received state recognition through the Kentucky Division of Forestry as the location for Kentucky’s largest Winged Elm tree. The recognition confirms that the Winged Elm at the arboretum is the largest specimen of its kind in the state and is proudly added to the Kentucky Champion Tree Registry.
The Winged Elm has a circumference of 103”, 96’ height, and a 61’ spread for a total point of 214.25. The average Winged Elm size is typically seen at 40-50 feet high with a 30-40 ft. spread. The Division of Forestry began compiling a list of state-champion trees in 1968. The first list contained 51 species. Only trees referenced in the book Trees & Shrubs of Kentucky by Mary E. Wharton & Roger W. Barbour are considered for the Kentucky Champion Tree Program.
The nomination and subsequent recognition of this beautiful tree wouldn’t have been possible without the efforts of Matthew Strong, Chief Forester Madisonville Branch, and Forester Miranda Gatto for nominating and measuring this tree.
“It is an honor to receive state recognition for our Winged Elm at Mahr Park Arboretum. We are thankful for the Mahr’s gift to Madisonville of their land and the beautiful mature trees that make Mahr Park Arboretum so special. We invite you to explore our level II arboretum and to view this unique Kentucky Champion tree.” – Ashton Robinson, Park Superintendent.
