Discussion will include a review of the science behind an eclipse, safe viewing and photographing of the eclipse, and Dr. Steedly's personal eclipse chasing experiences.

Sounds of Independence Concert featuring Jennifer Nettles

Independence Bank will host its Sounds of Independence concert, headlining Jennifer Nettles, at the Hopkins County Fairgrounds on Saturday, August 19, 2017. This premier concert is one of many events in Madisonville, leading up to the solar eclipse on Monday. The concert is free and will be outdoors rain or shine.Confirmation of the exact start time will come later. Jennifer Nettles has been credited as one of the most admired and animated performers of her time. She has been honored by songwriting abilities with five awards for her #1 Platinum hit "Stay," that also earned her GRAMMY, ACM and CMA awards. She is the first female artist since 1972 to be the female solo songwriter artist on an ACM Song of the year winner. Her powerhouse vocals and vivacious energy earned her the Crystal Milestone Award for her outstanding performances. Planetarium Seminar: The Night Skies Around Us

How often can you see the stars in the middle of the day? well, you can. Along with seeing the stars in the night sky, one will travel to distance galaxies and to the moons of Jupiter as well. Billy Hix, director of STEM outreach at Motlow College and a NASA faculty fellow, presents his portable planetarium at Madisonville Community College. Hix has worked with tens of thousands of students, teachers and the public inside his planetarium and promises that it will be a "WOW" event as everyone gets "warmed up" for the total solar eclipse on August 21.

NASA Consultant Billy Hix will guide sky watchers through the total solar eclipse. Parking lots open at 8 am; eclipse begins at 11:56 am. Carpooling is recommended. Eclipse glasses are required to safely view the eclipse. A limited number will be distributed during the event. Eclipse viewers are encouraged to bring chairs and sunscreen. Vending machines are available and the MCC Bookstore will offer refreshments for purchase.

Senior Bingo Luncheon

Tradewater River Fitness Challenge

Tradewater River Fitness Challenge includes a 4K run, 2 mile canoeing/kayaking and 16.5 mile bike ride. Registration will take place between 6:30 and 8 am with a mandatory pre-race safety meeting at 8:45 am. The men's event will begin at 8 am and the women's at 9:10. First Day Hike

Hikers will meet begin a 3.25 mile hike on the park’s Lake Trail. Wear proper clothing and bring your own water, snacks, and hiking stick. This hike is not recommended for children under the age of 5. Leashed dogs are welcome on the hike. Hiking sticks are available for purchase in the park’s gift shop.
